This semester, students in Jeff Toto’s General Music 9 class have taken a hands-on approach to understanding music by creating their own compositions and visual art. This year-long course dives into the foundational elements of music, including rhythm, harmony, and pitch. Using these core concepts, students have transformed their knowledge into creative expression, combining technology and art in unique ways.
In this recent project, students applied their skills on Soundtrap, a digital audio workstation, to compose original "studying songs." Each student produced a 3-4 minute instrumental piece designed to create a calm, focused atmosphere—perfect for helping others concentrate while studying. The project allowed them to explore music creation in a way that highlights the calming and purposeful role music can play in our lives.
But the creativity didn’t stop there! Once the compositions were complete, the class explored a new dimension by using an AI extension to generate images that match the tone and feel of their music. The visuals created were not only striking but also beautifully aligned with the music, enhancing the overall experience and showcasing the students’ artistic visions.
This project exemplifies how SHA’s General Music program fosters a well-rounded approach to music education, allowing students to explore, create, and express themselves through the arts and technology. Congratulations to our talented students on their inspiring work—your creativity is truly SHA Proud!
