Why Sacred Heart Academy?

SHA students shine by being recognized by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards! Congratulations to Emma Cullinan, Elizabeth Rizzo, Charlotte Preall, Lily DiPino, Andrea Pascu, Julianna Capraro, Isabella De Palma (not pictured), Julie Rosellon, Hailey Peter, Abigail Vasconez, Avril Desir, Sameera Rampertab, and Lucia Guerra. Students entering the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards created original works in one of the following writing categories, poetry, short stories, or personal memoirs. Submissions are judged on originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. At the regional level, Honorable Mentions recognize promising work, Silver Keys are awarded to strong pieces in the top 7–10% of submissions, and Gold Keys—the highest regional honor—are given to the top 5–7%, with only Gold Key recipients advancing to national consideration. Past winners include some of the most influential writers of the 20th and 21st centuries, such as Stephen King, Joyce Carol Oats, and Sylvia Plath.

Sacred Heart Academy is proactively designating Wednesday, February 12, 2025 as an Asynchronous Day of instruction. SHA has the proven ability to provide excellent academics both in-person and virtually. In order to ensure that all students, especially our 9th graders, are comfortable with the college readiness skills of remote learning, we will use tomorrow (2/12) as an asynchronous learning day.

Sacred Heart's Mock Trial team put on a strong performance last week, going up against George W Hewlett High School. The team came out victorious in the preliminary round of the New York State High School Tournament in Nassau County! The team is currently working hard to prepare for the next round of competition. For Mrs. Haun's Theology 10 classes project titled, “Who Do You Say That I Am?” Students were asked to imagine that friends who practice a different faith asked them to make a Google Slides presentation about Jesus to a group of peers from their synagogue, mosque, or temple. The project focuses on highlighting the many cultures of the world and their understanding and representation of Jesus Christ. On each slide they had to include an image of Jesus from different countries in various styles. The images were culturally diverse and varied in artistic style. The slides included a theological quote or scripture verse from the New Testament that further explains Who Jesus is. When all of these images and understandings are brought together they show the central teaching that Christ is for ALL people. That it is in diversity that humanity’s beauty is fully captivated. #LeadWithHeart

Dr. Feinman's Chemistry classes tested the conductivity of solutions! Students experimented with additives to distilled water including sodium chloride, dextrose, and even Gatorade to see if they could conduct electricity and light up the light bulb. The experiment even revealed that the electrolytes in Gatorade were not sufficient enough to light up the bulb, be careful with what you buy! #LeadWithHeart ❤💛

History coming alive at SHA! After learning about Gothic Art & Architecture during their unit on the Middle Ages, Mrs. Walsh's 9th grade Global Studies classes showed off their creativity by making their own Illuminated Letters. Great work! #LeadWithHeart ❤💛

Last Saturday night, SHA's Limb Kind Club attended The Limb Kind Foundation's Show Your Shine Event as a silver level sponsor. The Limb Kind Club, started by Junior Cate Barthel and Sophomore Cate O'Marra and moderated by Mrs. Querci, raised funds to sponsor a young girl from Ireland, Ciara, who was diagnosed with a lower limb deficiency resulting in a double above the knee limb loss as well as PFFD on one side. SHA junior Mikayla Marino successfully organized a Lego Drive for Memorial Sloan Kettering Kids. With the help of her family and friends, Mikayla delivered over 100 sets of Legos! Isabel is an accomplished student and community leader. Since 2014, she has been swimming with the Holy Family CYO Swim Team and, since 2020, has volunteered as a swim coach, helping young girls build confidence, improve technique, and embrace teamwork. A dedicated volunteer, Isabel has organized annual drives since 2016 to support St. Brigid’s Pantry and Parish Outreach, including School Supply and Backpack Drives, Thanksgiving Gift Card Drives, and Christmas Stocking Drives, benefiting hundreds of families. At SHA, she serves as Co-President of the New Beginnings Club, which raises awareness about homelessness and organizes donations for the Mary Brennan Inn Soup Kitchen. This year, Isabel was the team leader for the Lady Spartans Against Breast Cancer, where the girls worked together and raised over $6000! In addition to her volunteer work, Isabel works as a lifeguard and swim instructor, using her skills to teach lifesaving techniques and promote water safety. Her efforts exemplify leadership, compassion, and a commitment to making a difference. #LeadWithHeart ❤💛

Financial Literacy programs at Sacred Heart continue to have our girls take the lead! SHA girls continue to Rock the Street, Wall Street! 160 students and alumnae instructors participated in a 6-week curriculum on financial and investment literacy, which included a trip to the closing bell on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange! Additionally, grade levels have traveled to the Tobin College of Business at Saint John’s University, Molloy University Business School. Our Women’s Leadership Forum featured a presentation from Shannon Lally McLay ‘96, CEO and Founder of the Financial Gym. #LeadWithHeart ❤💛

The SHA Girls Giving Back Club led their first service project with the Operation Gratitude organization. Presidents Katherine Mazaroski and Anna Calabrese led this project! This story was recently submitted to the Loukoumi Organization for their inspiring stories publication and was accepted to be published in late April. Here is what Katherine had to say about the campaign, "I was motivated for this project as my father served in the U.S. Navy, and I have held a very close relationship with the veterans in my community. In creating a service club, I wanted our first project to be dedicated toward shedding light on and empowering our service members, and the club felt this project allowed us to involve the rest of the SHA community in that goal."
